Category: Challenge Tips

One of our readers asked a very good question today, and I would like to share her question and what my response was. At first glance you may think her question is very simple, but I feel it certainly indicates she is very wise in that she is wanting to exercise caution when linking. As a new blogger, she in my opinion, is quite smart for recognizing that importance!

Her question along with my reply provided a great opportunity for a post here in that it allows me to express further the importance of practicing good seo when you exchange links. This was her question:

I’m new to blogging and I looked at your site, and was wondering how do you exchange links? And, what does it do to your original blogs?

This was my reply to her question, and I hope I addressed what she was wanting to know, and I also elaborated a bit more here as I posted this for your reading:

I encourage bloggers to exchange links within either relevant posts, or posts which have some of the same keywords in common. In other words, say blogger A has a cat blog, and blogger B has a dog blog. They can create relevancy by posting about a keyword they both have in common such as “pet”.

For the blog reader it’s good because the reader clicks through the link to the other blogs post and they find it has relevancy; in this case because both blogs are writing about pets. That is also favored among search engines because their robots also note that the linking blog posts have relevancy. So, it’s a good practice for seo (search engine optimization), and for their readers.

In contrast, if bloggers exchange links within say their sidebar, but their blogs have no common ground it can turn off the reader, and it’s not as favored by the search engines such as the Google bot either. If a blog has too many outgoing links to unrelated posts or blogs that isn’t favorable for either the human reader, or for the search engines.

As an example, on one of my blogs I write about sailing adventures on the high seas. If I posted a bunch of links in my sidebar to cat or dog blogs (as an example), my readers will get turned off as well as the search engines.

So, long story short – keep relevancy in mind as it is a very important key to linking. The more incoming backlinks your blog acquires, the greater your page rank will rise, and that equates to more traffic from organic searches like from Google, and also boosts your Technorati stats.

If you are the one sending a backlink to another blog keeping relevancy in mind is important. If you are going to link to a blog that does not have common ground with yours, do it in a manner where you at least share common keywords of some sort to creating the relevancy.

If you exercise the dynamics of focusing on relevancy when linking it should not have any negative impact on your blogs. If you do some research over on Google’s site you will find they stress the importance of relevancy when linking in order to practice good seo.

Link popularity has the greatest weight in Google’s algorithm when the links are within content and they lead to relevant content. That’s another reason why you want to become successful at participating in the creation of a Link and Blog Challenge today!

Some of you may still wonder how you can propose a Link and Blog Challenge with other members. One of the easiest ways is to consider key words that your blogs have in common. As you look through our members blogs, think of key words that relate to both of your blogs, or that could be used within a blog post to create the relevancy and tie your post subject matter together.

Be creative and look at the various posts a blogger writes for their blog. You may even find they already have an existing post that contains key words to potentially unite your two post topics or blogs.

To serve as some examples, here are some ideas on how two different blogs could be tied together utilizing relevant key words. The words on the left for each example will represent key words or phrases from John Doe’s blogs, and the words to the right will represent the key words or phrases from Mary Smith’s blogs. The posts will then be linked to complete a Link and Blog Challenge! Using these examples, it would work like this:

PAGE RANK > TECHNORATI RANK
John Doe writes a post about obtaining page rank, and Mary Smith writes a post on her blog about Technorati rank. They both exchange links within their posts to complete a challenge.

RECIPE > RECIPE SHOPPING LIST
John Does writes a post about recipes on his recipe blog, and Mary Smith writes a post about shopping for items needed for specific recipes on her shopping tips blog. Links within the post are exchanged to complete the challenge.

FACE CREAM > FACIAL
John Doe writes a post about mens face creams on his mens blog, and Mary Smith writes a post about facials on her skin health blog. Links within the post are exchanged to complete the challenge.

I hope those examples serves as a way to inspire some new ideas for post ideas and how you can create a successful Link and Blog Challenge with another member! Please comment below if this information helps you to understand how to complete a challenge! :D

Building links with relevancy has significant importance. Receiving incoming links from sites with page rank is of course everyone’s dream, but linking with relevancy is also a very beneficial focus, and why Link & Blog began. If you haven’t already been over there, the Google webmaster help center features some great advice for link building.

Here are some key points covered by their guidelines, which you can find here.

  1. Links help search engine robots to find your site, and can give your site greater visibility in search results.
  2. Google uses algorithms which distinguish natural links from unnatural links. Natural links are developed when other sites find your content valuable and helpful for their visitors. Only natural links are useful for the indexing and ranking of your site.
  3. Unnatural links to your site, which were established specifically to make your site look more popular to search engines are not beneficial.

When you select a link partner to challenge be sure you keep those points in mind. Focus on building “natural links” with relevancy when you and your link partner determine what your Link & Blog Challenge will be.

Since natural links are important determine how you can build relevancy within your post topics, which contain your links. This is very important, and especially if your blogs are not normally in the same type of topic category.

Linking to a specific post permalink with relevancy will always provide greater benefits than simply exchanging links within a sidebar. If you keep those points in mind your Link and Blog Challenge experience with your link partner will have far greater benefits for you and your readers.

You may be asking, “So what really is a Link & Blog Challenge?”

Obviously we already know what a link, a blog, and a challenge are as they stand separately,
but what happens when you put the three together?

LINK: First you must have a desire to link to other blogs, regardless of their popularity within the search engines, regardless of their rank. The exception of course would be blogs that are offensive to the readers or to the search engines, but that’s a topic for another day. If we all only wanted to link to the big dogs, the little dogs would never get anywhere. In the long run we will be rewarded by the search engines by linking not only to other blogs, both big and small, but most importantly by linking with relevancy.

BLOG: Second, we all know how to blog, or maybe you came here to learn how to blog. If you are ready to blog then you are ready for a challenge!

CHALLENGE: The third component is where the fun comes in. I think the The American Heritage Dictionary says it best with their 4th definition of challenge, “A test of one’s abilities or resources in a demanding but stimulating undertaking.”

Wow! That says it perfectly doesn’t it! So we put those all together and here is what we have, and the common goal we all share:

We have the desire to link to other blogs, regardless of their popularity, but with the important goal to create relevancy between the blog posts we link with. This is for the benefit of our readers, and for the benefit of practicing good seo (search engine optimization). In order to do so, we present one another with a challenge, which will test one’s abilities or resources in a demanding but stimulating undertaking!

So there you have a Link and Blog Challenge! Are you up for a challenge? If so, isn’t it time you contact one of our members and present to them a Link & Blog Challenge?

When you create a Link and Blog Challenge it’s very important that you remain focused on the topic or niche of your blog. Why?

First, for the best interest of your readers! Established fans of your blog are going to want to read what they know you normally serve from the menu. Imagine for a moment you own a well established fast food restaurant. Your repeat customers come through the door, and without any prior announcement your restaurant has suddenly and drastically changed the menu. Lets just say now everything on the menu is either lochs and bagels, sushi, or other raw food! How long do you think the customer looking for the hamburger, fries and the milk shake are going to stick around? Not for long!

You may be laughing and thinking, “Wow! I thought we were talking about a blog here and suddenly you’re talking about a restaurant menu! Talk about off topic!” Okay, point made right? LOL! It’s best for your readers that you remain focused, otherwise you can create a paradigm.

Search engines such as Google also value the focus of the blogger. Like your readers, search engine robots will get confused if you are often off topic – occasionally is probably okay. For the best SEO (search engine optimization) it’s very important to remain on topic as much as possible. Otherwise, linking within a post without relevancy is no better than just exchanging links within a sidebar to blogs of a different nature.

When you create a challenge with another blogger be sure that you are both focused on the importance of building relevancy between your blogs. Although your blogs may not normally be related in topic or niche, this can be accomplished if both of you are clever within your posted content. You will be rewarded in the long run far greater by both your readers and by the search engines, if you focus on creating relevancy.

For further reading and several examples for creating relevancy, you may wish to read two sections in “How it Works”. When you open that page scroll down to the examples under the headings, “Creating Reciprocal Links” and “Creating One-Way Links”. Another example may also be found within our “How We Began” page. Practicing the strategy of relevancy will maintain your readership, and send more organic traffic to your blog.

Ice cream anyone? Huh? I thought we were talking about blogs! :)
