Got blog on Blogger using a custom domain? Curious how you can possibly adapt Google Apps to use with your blog on your custom domain? Sometimes our curiosity gets the best of us, which was the case for me a while back when experimenting with Google Apps. My experiment took place just prior to Blogger providing the ability to create pages.

My curiosity and experimentation with Google Apps broke my Blogger custom domain, leading to a dreadful 404 error on the front end! Panic of course set in, assuming I was not going to be able to quickly remedy the problem. The downside of using Blogger is of course the fact that you don’t have access to files or settings in the back end of your site, when such a problem can arise.

Today I discovered a blogging friend who also gave in to the same curiosity of using Google Apps to attempt to create a page with Blogger, so I knew I wasn’t alone with getting a bit too creative! :o If you experimented with Google Apps, or perhaps broke your Blogger custom domain resulting in a 404 error, the solution is a quick one, assuming you can still get to your Blogger dashboard.

Here’s the quick solution to correcting the 404 not found error:

  1. Select ‘Settings’
  2. Select ‘Publishing’
  3. Where it says, ‘Your Publishing on a Custom Domain’, select ‘Switch to blogspot.com.’
  4. Go to the front end of your site, which should now be back to normal. If the 404 error is still there, clear your browser cache.
  5. Return to the same area in your dashboard, and select to redirect to your custom domain. All should be well again!

It’s always nice to learn from the challenges others have faced, so I hope this was of help to you if you find yourself with a 404 not found error using a custom domain with Blogger. As for creating pages with Blogger, make use of the Blogger page feature, to stay out of trouble – lol. :D Happy blogging!

Blogger Podcasts Blog Posts

If you’re into podcasting, and you have a blog using Blogger, you may already be up on the scoop that you can add a podcast to your blog and to podcasting feeds! Wow, that’s pretty cool, huh! :) Imagine the opportunities by adding podcasts to your blog! You could share podcasts with your blog readers featuring not only music, but what about these other ideas? Share updates with your voice recording, read a former blog post excerpt, share a paragraph from a book… the possibilities are endless! Here’s how to get started with turning your Blogger blog into a podcaster! Happy podcasting!

Blogger just keeps getting better! Blogger in draft, now offers Blogger Template Designer from within your dashboard. It’s easy to locate from your Blogger in Draft dashboard, so you can get started with it right away! Locate this tab from your Blogger in Draft dashboard, from here: Go to “Layout”, and then select “Template Designer”.

I know you’re excited to get started with a customization of your blog template, but wait!!! Before you jump into customizing your template, be sure to save your custom codes you may have added such as meta tags and java scripts for Google Analytics, Google Webmaster Tools etc. Also save all your sidebar widget links and other customizations all within a Notepad document, so you don’t lose those and can add them into your new template once you’ve selected your designs. Note: Be sure you do not ever use software like “Word”, because it will add codes that you do not see once you paste your codes back into your customized template.

This is perfect timing for Blogger to come out with the customization through Blogger Template Designer, because my Blogger blogs are ready for a new look. What about your blogs? Here’s the video to get you excited about the many possibilities by using Blogger Template Designer! Have fun!

Save Posts for Your Blogger Blog

For those of you who have blogs on the Blogger platform, did you know you can save your blog from your Blogger in Draft dashboard? Here’s how to do it:

From your Blogger dashboard select “Settings” and then “Basic”. That’s where you’ll see the option to “Export” your blog. There’s no fear needed if you select to “export” your blog, because it will simply provide you with a download of your blog, to save on your computer! Just don’t hit “delete blog” from the menu – lol!

Now of course if you choose to export your blog you can use that feature for that specific purpose, but it also provides a way to save your blog posts. Here’s several screen shots from the Blogger in Draft dashboard to lead you through the export steps:

Blogger Navigation Bar Advantages

Yes, you read that title correctly. There are actually advantages to having the Blogger navigation bar on your blog. If you’re not sure what the navigation bar is, it’s the sometimes annoying looking nav bar that spans your blog across the top horizontally, with the Blogger logo, search box, next blog, share this etc features. One of my earlier posts discussed advantages of leaving the Blogger navigation bar intact, and today I just updated that post with another Blogger navigation bar advantage. Check it out!
