Identify Your Niche and Target Market

An interesting topic for bloggers is discussion over what your niche or target market should be if you plan to monetize your blogs. You may have caught my post from earlier this month in regards to identifying what you should blog about. In that post I shared the importance of blogging about something you are passionate about. Even if you plan to use a blog for monetizing I still hold to my foundation of basing it on something that you have a passion for. Otherwise, burn out for the topic could occur quickly unless you have the time to do significant research to acquire fresh inspiration of your own to continue with that topic.

If you are on a quest to monetize your blog, second to blogging about what you are passionate about, you will want to identify what your niche for your blog will be, and who your target market will be.

Why choose a niche? By selecting a niche as your foundation for your blog, you have created a goal as to what your blog post topics will be based upon. Secondly, you will have an opportunity to develop a following of readers who will know what to expect from your blog, and what you will be promoting. This can equate to the opportunity to monetize your blogs, and to promote it through a target market. That same strategy will also enable you to promote specific keywords far more effectively for search engine optimization of your blogs, once again adding to your monetizing efforts.

Selecting a niche is not enough in itself in order to take your monetizing to the next level. To really succeed with your blog marketing you need to determine how you will gain traffic and promote your blog. This is where knowledge of your target market comes into play.

As an example, is your target market for your niche more likely to be families, single parents, or who? Advertising efforts can be very effective if you have identified your target market effectively and geared your advertising toward attracting that specific market.

The largest mistake I made with one of my first blogs was not properly identifying what my niche would be. As a result, I failed to identify what my keywords needed to be for optimal search engine placement and results. The blog had too wide of a spectrum of topics, and that can quickly become a negative rather than a positive. It is my hope that you will therefore learn from my mistakes, and identify your passion, niche, and your target market.
